A rental story for you. Les Jarrett and I did 3 big trips for the America By Rail series. After the monster first one in 1994, my Mini-Van was getting old and tired. So we rented another mini-van for the second video we did in 1995(America By Rail-The West Coast Route). Living near Cincinnati I picked up the rental at the Cincinnati Airport. We got an unlimited mileage rental for one month. I cannot remember the exact price but maybe $900.00. We proceeded to drive to the west coast(After picking up Les in Indy), and shot some tourist ops(Yosemite, Sugar Pine),along the way, as well as shooting the Coast Starlight from Santa Barbara all the way to Portland for several days. Then we shot more tourist lines in Oregon, and headed back home. At Cheyenne we went to the Steam shop and one of the steam crew told us the 6936(Centennial) was running on the Denver to North Platte train. So it was on the way and we chased it to NB. After the month was nearly up I returned the van to the airport, and the guy asked the mileage. It was something over 10,000 miles. The guy was livid, stating that it is now over the mileage where we can sell it for whatever price level it was. Hey, it was unlimited mileage, and there were no stipulations. We did very little off-road stuff, except back around Andesite(SP?) California, where we shot the CS in the early morning with Mount Shasta! Probably a few more spots but mostly on paved roads that time. Here is the shot I made with my Pentax 6x7 as I let the video roll here. Les shot a bit further behind for a slightly different view. This was on a RR service road I think.
