The first time I went to visit my future bride in Durango (January '83) I bought tickets on the Parlor car for the Cascade train the next Saturday. We had met in December on a Trailways bus from Salida to Denver (Trailways, the romantic bus line) and I came down for a visit right after New Years. During the week I was there I had proposed to her, down on one knee and all, even though I didn't have a ring to give her, so I thought the Silverton for her 1st ever train ride a good idea.
Leaving Durango the attendant took our first drinks order and we must have been glowing or something because he asked if we were newlyweds! I told him that no, we were just newly engaged. Somehow that first round was the only one on the tab when time came to settle up! It's still a sweet memory.
BTW, she was only 18 at the time (I was 21) but I neglected to tell the depot agent that when I bought the tickets.
She bought tickets as a surprise for a moonlight trip to Cascade in February.
We celebrated her moving in with me, in Gunnison, by going to Grand Jct the next week and riding the last Zephyr to Glenwood Springs.
That next Summer we took our honeymoon in Durango, stayed at the Strater and rode the train.
