In an amazing coincidence, this morning I was searching a file folder for something unrelated, and came across this 30 year old newspaper clipping that shows my brother Juergen and his soon-to-be bride just before boarding The Spirit of Washington dinner train from Kennewick to Prosser. We had chartered the observation-lounge car. They were married leaving Kennewick, and a wedding dinner was put on for about 30 guests, followed by dessert on the return, and some wonderful riding in the open car along the Yakima river. Well, not quite as spectacular as the Animas river canyon but still a nice ride. 30 years later my brother and his wife are living on the shoulder of Red Mountain with a view of the Yakima river, my daughter , who is holding the wedding dress, will be celebrating her 39th birthday in a couple of weeks, and the Spirit of Washington ended up being moved to the Puget Sound area for a number of years until the rail line was abandoned for freeway expansion. Happily, the Silverton line is still alive and well!
