Not sure how things work down under, but here in the US, some of the airlines, notably Southwest, have policies that allow you to cancel flights with non-refundable tickets, and "bank" the money for use on another trip within 12 months of the date when the original ticket was purchased. Due to the virus pandemic, these airlines, including Southwest, have offered extensions on the 12-month policy, so hopefully, the funds will be still be available once there is a vaccine and it starts to become safe to get on an airplane. I try to avoid airlines with inflexible policies, and that includes some big names. On most of them, anyone with a non-refundable fare gets treated like "steerage".....think American and United.
I saw John's from-the-heart letter yesterday and it was not unexpected. To be honest, it was almost a relief......despite the fact that I have been looking forward to this event for several years. Here in Massachusetts, we have lost almost 6,500 people to this virus, so most of us here are still pretty gun-shy about this "opening up" stuff. I think it will be a while before large gatherings are safe, especially for those who are older.
I am planning on holding on to my tickets to the Victorian Iron Horse Event. This is a bucket-list item from my perspective. As long as I am in good health, I intend to be there, whenever it happens.
