NM Rail Runner has all new right-of-way from where it diverges from the BNSF (ex-Santa Fe) about 22 miles southwesterly by rail from Lamy and and about 40 miles from Albuquerque. After about 5 miles it goes into the center of I-25 for about 12.5 miles where it gets to the outskirts of Santa Fe.

Then it connects with the old Santa Fe branch (SFS) to run on that alignment for about 3.4 miles to its last station stop adjacent to the old depots near downtown Santa Fe.

The new construction is much more direct route from Albuquerque and Santa Fe than through Lamy.
