Hi Chris,
I'm not sure you can get a manual on a rental car in the US. I've never thought to try. I just take what they give me and it's never been a manual.
BTW, you can probably tell a tourist that has recently arrived in the UK or OZ or New Zealand by the fact that he turns on the windshield wipers to signal a turn. It took me a day to get it right on a consistent basis. Then I did the same thing when I came home!
The other thing that would occasionally slip me up is the shift gate pattern is the same as in the US, but it's on your other side and with the left hand in right drive cars. When I need to accelerate hard at home, it's pull the gear lever back and towards me to get second gear. In a right drive car, the ingrained impulse is the same but that puts you into fourth of even sixth gear. This is seriously embarrassing when trying to make a quick entry into a roundabout!
