That's funny Michael,
the exact opposite experience when I went to the US for the first time back in '82, asked for a Manual for familiarity purposes as being on the wrong side of the road there. The funny looks we got in both Colorado and California, both in referring to it as a Manual, and wanting one over an Auto was beyond their comprehension I guess.
Oddly I didn't get that renting on the last leg of the trip in Vancouver, I put that down to being more in common with the Canadians.
