There's a number of expressions that are long out of date and have lost their original meanings. But they're always rooted in historical fact.
"Don't give a tinker's damn" and "I'll be there with bells on" are two that come to mind offhand.
And all you have to do is look at the Glossaries of early books like Mixed Train Daily, to find a ton of railway terms that only the hard core would know today.
