A team or "yoke" of oxen is traditionally led or driven by a person walking on the left side. Accordingly, the ox on the left (near the driver) is called the "near ox", and the ox on the right (away from the driver) is the "off ox".

The "near" vs. "off" distinction is also used for horses, so the left side of a horse (from which it's mounted by a rider) is the "near" side, and the right side of the horse is the "off" side.
