KEEP the original 8mm. It is indeed very durable.
Transfer to VHS or DVD for use, keeping the original for archival purpose. Store it in a cool, location. Constant humidity and constant temperature are best. If you notice a vinegar smell, the print is decomposing. Keep any vinegar smelling prints AWAY from non-decomposing prints. It is caled "vinegar syndrome" and will contaminate other prints that are in good shape.
This advice compliments of your local non-print materials presevation specialist.
