I too have been in PC h/w and s/w since 1980. I was designing some of the original expansion boards for the 64K version of the IBM PC in 1984.
Your summary is very good. My only comment is that I was very impressed with the Apple's GUI. I thought that this is great that you did not need to remember all the commands of DOS/TOS/OS (I did have a system I had to use the front panel to load the boot loader to get the paper tape to load) 8O
However, any GUI has so many files there and programs running just to get to operate, the resources needed for a system expands exponentially. IBM/MS DOS has few if and programs running. In fact, I had win95 set up to boot to DOS only. I still use several DOS based programs I like.
My favorite editor is a DOS based editor with no frills from Norton from 1985.
I miss some of the flexability of DOS. However, the new features of Windows have merit. I enjoy listening to C. W. McCall's "The Silverton" and "The Galloping Goose" on my PC's player. In fact, I've wondered if the Earl in "Wolf Creek Pass" is our beloved Earl
All advancements in technology (steam to diesel or slide rule to PC or caboose to FRED) have both positive features and negative features, not just good ones. Unfortunately, some peoples abuse of weakness will always be with us in one form or another however unfortunate it is to all of us "law abiding" people (like the Tylenol posioning panic 15-20 years ago).
I did manage to somehow include narrow gauge!
