Re: Roger Hogan, Heads Up!!! *LINK*

First let me apologize for the topic and length of this post. This post is not on NG, so you may wish to skip.
First to Rick and Roger. Rick check the internet header of the sent e-mail, most likely Roger is being “spoofed” from someone else (a common practice in viruses).
Roger if you are getting a clean scan with a current (all updates install) Anti-virus software on your system, you should be ok. There is a virus that does disable updating of anti-virus software and updating of the Operating System however. McAfee offers a free virus scanner call stinger that will help detect if you have this type of virus. Go to the link for it.
Now for Mike, Mike I enjoy your discussions about NG and trains in general, but you are wrong on this topic. First let me start out and say that computers and software is my profession. I’ve been at it for over 20 years now and I’ve had to learn over 10 different operating systems in that time and expect to learn more as time goes on. I’m one of the people that stay up late fixing the problems when we get hit with a virus. First, anti-virus software does help, if nothing else to contain the virus infection.
The problem is not the operating systems, for all of them get viruses. I can remember when we put anti-virus software on the Macintosh as soon as we unpacked it from the box and start a scan first thing, because Apple had their burn disks infected by a disgruntled employee (and yes, Mac still get viruses). As for Linux, I won’t go into how many times I get a abuse e-mail that someone is using one of our boxes to relay spam, to find out that it’s a Linux box that was not locked down. The problem is not the company that makes the operating system, but the vandals that are writing viruses. Some of these individuals (I don’t like using the term persons for them since that implies that they have some humanity in them. I think that they are more akin to a live virus that they try to emulate) is just using them to show off, much like someone spray-painting the side of a building. Others are doing it for some other reason, either to help spammers or to possible to identify theft.
To blame a company for this is like saying that the murder is not at fault; it’s the fault of the (gun, knife, fill in the blank) companies for making something that can hurt people. It is the individual that must be responsible for their action. A company should and does supplies patches for their operating system when a problem is revealed.
As for Microsoft, I can remember when the same was said about IBM. It seems that a lot of people like to take shots at who ever is on the top. I got to support what ever we have, so that means that I’ve got to be able to work on Apples, Linux, VMS, UNIX and yes even Microsoft. As for one being better than the other, each system has it’s own advantages and disadvantages. As for which is the best, it like asking someone what is their favorite car, everyone has an answer. Pick what ever works for you, but don’t tell me that it’s the best, because there is no such thing.
As for Viruses, it is not a question of “if I get a virus”, it is a question of when. For all systems can and do get them. If you don’t have some sort of anti-virus software for your system, you are part of the problem, not the solution as you are proposing (and there is anti-virus software even for Linux).
I aI hope we can get back to narrow gauge, for trains are one of the ways I keep my sanity (better not say models with that, Pat might see <img class=" />).
