Along with telling the speed of the train, the GPS could occasionally provide some entertainment, if you turned the voice on it would frantically (or at least as frantically as a computer can) inform you that "this is not a road, you are not on a road" as the locator showed you cruising along down the tracks. As you approached a grade crossing it would once again remind you that you were not on a road and offer the helpful suggestion to "turn right in 1/4 mile, 100 feet, 100feet etc, to get back on a road".
1744's tender road as nicely as the locomotive did poorly, it was amazing to take one step back from the cab onto the tender and go from being bounced all over the place to a nice smooth ride. Unfortunately, this was not an option for the engineer or fireman. (I would sometimes ride in the cab over to LaVeta and then take a nap in one of the passenger cars on the way back)
