We drove the old road from Antonito to Chama in
the early 60's. That was when the road still went under the RR at Cumbres. The 3 buildings near the
old road and west of the "depot" were all unoccupied.
While wandering around taking pictures we discovered a trash pile on which lay the foot
"board" from an ornate wrought iron bed. After
comments about how well it had survived in that
climate, we went on our way.
A few days later we were above Como on the old Boreas Pass ROW and came upon the city dump.
There lay the matching Head Board to the bed we had seen at Cumbres. We were kicking ourselves that we hadn't loaded up the one from the trash pile there. We would now have had a real relic !!
At the Como dump there were also several abandoned wooden rockers that would have restored beautifully.
Can't you see our Dodge Sedan with all that stuff tied on top making our way back to Illinois ?
