Should be able to possibly prolong the life of tubes and sheets with oil. Nothing abrasive to eat away at the tubes and the tube sheet.

Out of curiosity, is there anyway you could post pictures of the firebox setup? The brick work, brick arch if any? Firepan setup. My only experience is with Shay 9, 111, and 40. All of which had rather small narrow fireboxes. Curious how things change with a step up in size. 12 has a very different design in her firebox, but we didn't put the brick in.
