Many years ago I went back to the old country for my grandfather's 90th birthday. He had emigrated as a boy but after my grandmother passed he returned to the islands. I was wandering around the port area when I noticed a small elderly man carrying a 100 kilo sack of rice on his head up a hill. I was 29 at the time and could never have put that sack above my head. My grandfather used to run a horse drawn hay baling outfit, following the drying hay north from San Luis Obispo up to the San Francisco Bay. There were several wagons in the outfit (including a chuck wagon), all horse drawn traveling on Cal Route 1. I used to think 50 on that highway was crawling, until I remembered my grandfather's business. In order to qualify for SS, he worked loading 150 # bales of jute from age 60-65. He was all of 5'4", but strong for his age.
