Back in 1993 we took snowmobiles down the canyon from Apache Road crossing. We were chasing the last day of the Rotary run. We stayed in the valley, and had to cross a stream that fed into the Los Pinos river, which was quite tricky, as it was thawing. We eventually ran out of flat area and had other obstacles, so we stopped. We could see Cascade Trestle in the distance and got a quick shot going away there. I was back at the road crossing in 2014, and drove down a ranch road. Ran into the owner who said we could go down there, but eventually there was a fence that would prevent access to the valley today.
The access you guys refer to on the south side of Apache Canyon(Los Pinos valley I drove back in the 80's, but eventually gave up on it. Former employee Gerald Blea suggested it was better suited to horseback, and that with some work you could get some good views of Rock Tunnel. Don't recall seeing any pics from back there except perhaps one or two. Would be a great spot if you could get there. Make sure you have provisions, as it could be a loooong haul.

PS I still want to get to the bottom of Whiplash. I think the last time I was there I was on a couple of "Closed" roads. My wallet suffered from SUV repairs when I got back to Ohio.
