I understand your point, I agree, and have actually alluded to this in other posts. Noting that there are a great many people who neither ride the train nor care about it at all, let's consider the people who
do ride it. I would surmise that the majority of people riding the train wouldn't care if it was steam or diesel, if it was narrow gauge or standard, or it was historically accurate to any degree or not. They are there to take a train ride through the beautiful mountains to have lunch in a quaint old mining town.
As such, what is near and dear to our hearts is meaningless to most of the world. If we like coal-fired narrow gauge steam trains in the big mountains, we have to play nice and be amenable to the rest of the world. In the end, we get to do this only at their mercy.
