I can't speak as to exactly why the headlight was moved, but I assume that it was done as part of its conversion to mixed use branch line service. My books are currently packed up since I'm in the middle of an international move, so I don't have access to more precise info, but 760 and one other T-29 4-6-0 (I want to say 779) had their drivers swapped out for smaller ones and their headlights moved to the center of the smokebox during the same shopping.
