Wow, two narrow gauge 2-6-2's numbered "12"...... Except this one is 5/12 full size....
Yep, saw it there today, it got put up there last week some time.
I run there a few times a month, what does anyone want to know?
This little guy was built in the 1940's by the Texas & Pacific RR as a 3" scale 4-6-2. Hayne Ellis and Guy Stillman bought it in the 1960's and had Bill Daney rebuild it as a 5" scale 2-6-2. When Stillman donated his railroad to the City of Scottsdale in the early 1970's, #12 was the last engine to leave his property in 1974 or so. I went to the last run of Guy's RR.
#12 was the first engine to run at the McCormick RR Park when it opened in 1975. By around 1980, she was getting real tired and set aside for shopping. Rebuilt #11 - Stillman's first engine - was in service and a new engine, 4-6-0 #10 was on the property by then. Over the years #12 was disassembled and evaluated. There was a LOT wrong with the frame and boiler. It was deemed cheaper to build a new engine from scratch than overhaul #12 and make her right - something she never was. It was decided to put #12 on display. So, she was sort of reassembled with worn out parts and placed on a piece of track in the park where she will now be a piece of "lawn art"....
Kinda too bad. #12 was a pretty nice looking little mill.
November 1974.
