That was my understanding too that 493 was being restored to gain operational efficiency. The oil conversion was secondary. Hauling two more cars over a K-36 could equate to roughly 16.7% more revenue per train. The math is 14 cars/12 cars = 16.7%. The revenue gain over a K-28 is even more dramatic 40% (14 cars/10 cars). Sure, you would burn a little more fuel and need another car attendant or two, but you wouldn't have additional expense for engine crews, overnight hostlers, or regular maintenance in order to gain that additional revenue. If 493 works out well, then we could see one of the K-28's get put back in the museum once comes due for rebuild. That my two cents...
