In short if the need was there, yes 498 could be restored. They would have to build her a new tender, but they just did that for the 493 so they know what they are doing. I think what has been found on the D&SNG and the C&TS is that all the K-37's have sound boilers and are all prime candidates for rebuilds if necessary. Think about it the K-36's and 28's have been running continuously for decades and if they are ever going to be pulled aside a d completely torn down for major rebuilds the K-37's will need to put in time and cover the trains while this happens. In the end using all the available locos only helps preserve all of them much longer.
