Shalona Crossing was the next location. We had a bit of a wait here as SP 18 performed a runby down the hill aways. The grade up the tangent to the crossing is every bit of 2.5%. 18 slugging it out with all she had in her....
By the time we worked our way up the snowpacked roads and down the equally snowpacked and steep road into Rockwood, both #18 and RGS 5 had arrived. A meeting was in progress for all concerned as to what the plan would be. The snow beyond Rockwood was getting very deep. They didn't want to risk taking the trains to Cascade and getting stuck if the slide above Tall timber came down again. It was also getting very difficult to get off the trains and get photolines set up in the snow. The decision was made to turn RGS 5 and #18 and back them down into the Canyon and do some runbys on the highline. #18 was proving to be a rather thirsty engine and there was a limit on how much "playing " they could do without having to cut and run for water.
The Conference is in progress here as 18 rests at Rockwood.
After some switching, 18 and the coach back into the Rockwood wye. Lots of snow here....
...and heading out the east end.
