The Cumbres section house was still very much in use in the mid-60's and this image suggests a rather rugged lifestyle. I remember peeking in and the accommodations were pretty basic. There have been some prior threads on this subject, and at least not so long ago there were folks still around and posting here who lived the life of the railroad section. As a retired rail who hired out on the SP in 1959 it is amazing how the amenities we take for granted these days have so rapidly changed. Railroad crews (and I am sure workers in a lot of other industries) regularly put up with conditions that we would call camping out these days.
