That is one of the challenges. Any number of chasers have done what Sam has done in one form or another. But they all look the same along trackside. Which more than anything is just another reason for being polite to everyone, I seem to remember one time that somebody in a photo line was rather rudely shouting at John Bush to get out of his picture. Fortunately John is good humored. Most of the time.
But the subject of this thread started out not being the good guys and the bad guys, but is there some way to harness the interesting in chasing into some kind of revenue stream. I see two dimensions to that. On one hand something may be gained by selling some kind of "contributors" pass. Some people like Sam will go out of their way to contribute, but others might be more likely to contribute if they are simply formally asked and quoted an amount. I'm avoiding the use of "chasers pass" for the liability issues raised. The second dimension is seeing if there is some kind of "value added" off train package that makes any sense. Michael mentioned the buses. Value added could also be associated with knowing where to go. The passenger capacity of the serious photo charters is very limited, perhaps there is a way of expanding that capacity by some mix of train riding and bus/van riding, which could lower the per capita cost. Just trying to think outside the box as is fashionable to say these days.
