If #5 had been up to snuff, and had functioning air brakes, she could have easily handled the caboose up the hill. When we ran the Eureka in Chama she ALMOST pulled a gon and 0503, and that is with only 125 lbs of steam.

The backwards driver story is the truth. It was thought that simply reversing the eccentric arms on the links would solve the backwards Johnson Bar problem. It did, but the steam admission in the valve timing went all to pot.
