An important consideration when making comparisons is that the Hawaii Railroad did not have the kind of long, steep grades that typified the narrow gauges in the Rockies. As noted, the size and tractive effort of No. 5 are slightly larger than the earliest D&RG locomotives. However - the earliest D&RG rolling stock was much lighter than the equipment in use after 1903. No. 5 was not going to be adequate for any heavy work on the C&TS with its heavier cars.
