Didn't mean to ruffle your feathers, but when you said "Imagine 3 of these on Cumbres......" I had a bit of a nightmare there for a moment!!! Yes, many of the early diesels are now gone as well. In March there was a big steam event in Trier, Germany with something like 7 different engines running on mainline passenger trains. There were even 2 of the vintage diesels from the 70's. One was a center-cab type, and the other which we always thought resembled a loaf of bread. But they too are now historic equipment. As I have said before I am a steam fan first, narrow gauge second. When it comes to good active steam in North America the two ex D&RGW lines are the best, hands down to visit. Were they diesel I would not bother. I have not been to the WP&Y. My brother rode it a couple of years ago, and stated it was not better than the D&S and C&TS, and had a lot less steam!!!
No offense to you for my statements, and opinions.
Greg
PS Here is a diesel photo for you taken in 1995 when we were working on America By Rail #2. Its kinda rare now I guess.
