When I was in high school (1964), only the smartest students took Physics. The school had just replaced the "real world" physics books with a mimeographed version of a new text which emphasized elementary particles rather than gross objects such as automobiles or locomotives. While they covered the basic laws, there was little connecting them to the material world. They were interested in creating particle physicists rather than introducing the average student to a rational explanation of the world.
