Hi Russ,
When describing myself, I tend to shy away from using the term "railfan." Rather than being a "railfan" with a camera, I prefer to think of myself as a photographer who happens to focus on railroad images. I am also a history buff and an engineer who enjoys understanding how historic technologies work. I prefer to see and photograph historically accurate operations and am definitely willing to pay to see such operations. As others have noted, putting three K-28s on the point of any train on the Silverton Branch would not be a historic re-creation. Some folks might enjoy seeing that (assuming that the operation wouldn't harm any of the historic rolling stock), but the challenge would be to find 40-50 like-minded folks who can come up with the cash to support the 5-figure check that it's likely to take to make it happen. I can't see the D&S doing it just so folks can pace it along Route 550 and my sense is that their social media post saying: "we'll consider it" was probably made more out of courtesy than anything else.
