I drove the Alaska Highway in my Dodge van sometime around 1979, all the way from the Los Angeles area up through Calgary and then through interior Canada via Prince George, Dawson Creek, Whitehorse and on to Fairbanks. Then down to McKinley Nat'l Park, Anchorage, Whittier and back to Whitehorse. Then down to Skagway. There had been a slide that affected the train trips and there were no available seats since the boat riders had taken the few seats available. I had not made a reservation so no ride. Took the ferry down to Prince Rupert and drove the rest of the way home. 4 weeks on the trip but I was young.
