I have been told by one of the most knowledgeable authorities on Climax geared steam locomotives that Climax reduced the wheel diameter of 70 Ton Climaxes from 36" to 35" so that the tractive effort of a 70 Ton Climax would be slightly greater than a 70 Ton Shay.
