Russ. I would have to find the old photos, but I am sure that was Labor Day weekend 1971. What I cannot remember off hand is if I was there with my 3 other buddies, or with the parents. 4 of us drove straight through from Ohio to Chama in 20 hours swapping drivers. We had 2 explorers tents in an open U-Haul trailer, along with two Honda motorcycles(Which by the way didn't like the elevation and had to be adjusted). On the trip the 4 guys took, we had gas wars in Kansas and I remember the cheapest was 19 cents a gallon. We stayed a night or two at the Y Motel(and I got my introduction to Coors Beer in Chama). But, mostly we camped on that trip, at Kelly's Campground which was on the left at the start of the curve to the first crossing leaving Chama. I believe we also stayed at Aspen Glade near Conejos, as well as the KOA outside Durango. I was 20 at the time, and I believe splitting the costs of everything the whole trip cost me $100.00 for 2 weeks. Man, those were the days. We even rode the C&TS once but I think it was $5.00 from Chama to Cumbres.
