Most serious photogs like clear and sunny with lots of smoke. For film and video we at least have the sound and moody sights in bad weather, which can be enhanced by low clouds. The very first video I did on the C&TS was in 1985 (Scary to think that was 32 years ago), and we had fog with a doubleheader to Cumbres which we chased. GM Dan Ranger said it was the longest train of the year, so 25-30 box car coaches. One day we rode the train from Chama-Antonito. At Osier they did switching of some of the end cars. It was raining, and then sleeting, and I got at least one thunder-clap in the audio as one of the engines was doing the switching. People had their lunches and heading back to the train to eat(I think this was before the dining hall). It was pretty cold (October), and I ended the video with a shot entering Rock Tunnel from the open gon and it was snowing. By the time we reached Antonito it was seemingly 20-30 degrees warmer and sunny! Just another day on the NG.
As I remember that trip we started on the C&TS and shot a weekend since it was likely to be doubleheaders due to the colors. Then we spent Mon-Thursday on the D&S, and went back to Chama for the next weekend, with another pair of doubleheaders, one of which we rode as mentioned. Have not done much colors since then, and would like to get back some day to see it again.
