The industry's general conversion to coal fuel during the same period couldn't have helped in that respect, either, given coal's propensity for leaving everything covered in soot. Add in the general shaky finances of most railroads as well as the shocking (to modern folks) level of economic instability of the period (constant fluxuation bookmarked by significant depressions in the 1870's and 1890's) and it's no shock the railroads wanted to cut costs. Too bad. Maybe modern public transportation would be better-received if it were built with half that level of polish and beauty.
