John,
your picture of the UP Alturas Turn is taken at Ambrose. There was a wye there once, SP left Helpers parked there, three SD-9's in August '92 I saw.

EDIT: Apparently while I was cross checking my memory with GoogleMaps, Dan beat me to it by minutes.
