In most cases crude oil is less dense than water (or beer), and I'd guess this is true of Chromo's crude. But some of the really crude stuff being pumped today is heavier than water. IIRC, it's hard to clean up after a spill 'cause it sinks to the bottom of lakes and streams.

IIRC, back in the early days Pennsylvania crude was bottled – and consumed – right out of the ground as a health tonic!
