One of the issues is that Kunkle uses both bronze and iron seats. The bronze seats would seal well in a steam application but over a period of time the
seats would erode (wire draw) and the valves would no longer seal. The valves we built for the Navy were for 400 psi service and you couldn't put a big
enough spring in the things to close against the pressure. We did a two stage where steam pressure holds the main stage shut and a smaller spring
operated pilot stage allows the main section to open. We still had to use stellite seats to get the thing to live, steam isn't a very friendly medium to work with.
