What Earl says is 100% true for any direct spring device, once you start flowing it the seating spring needs to overcome both the pressure and the additional force
which is caused (Bernoulli) by the flow itself. We built a couple of two stage steam reliefs many years ago for the Navy with Stellite seats and $3500 would have
about paid for the top 15% of the valve.
