Jim, I spent Sunday at the Georgetown Loop as a Father's Day present from my son and had a chance to talk with John Hammond about the Pineapple. I also saw the two blue & white ng switcher engines that the Loop got from U.S. Gypsum. John mentioned that they were turbo-diesels.
I didn't approach him while I was there, but have you or the C&TS approached the Loop about possibly leasing one of those ex U.S. Gypsum turbo-diesels for a year to use as a work train engine and also as backup power and a rescue engine? I know there was a leasing arrangement done in the case of the #15 and #19 a while back. It's worth a try to lease one given the tight steam power situation for this year.
The turbo power would be ideal to use on the high altitude sections of the C&TS. A purchase of a similar engine would be a prudent investment for the C&TS to use as a work train engine, backup power and rescue engine; also, as a helper engine up the "big hill" when necessary to save wear and tear on the steam power. But what do I know about such things, I'm only "one of the underlings"
