Huckleberry's infernal combustion locos similar?

June 19, 2000 09:21PM
Most of the information on our internal combustion locomotives was correct. But, 11 is a Gas-hydrostatic, with an International Harvester 6 cylinder. 5 probably still runs, but we haven't used it much since we got 11. If something's too big for 11, we just go get 7. 1203 threw a rod in August of '90 - it would be available for sale or trade if anyone would give us anything useful in exchange. 7 was built in 1952, not 1951. It is a GE "steel mill special", 52 tons with articulated trucks. The couplers are mounted on the trucks, so all the pull is through them - the carbody is just along for the ride. It is definitely Not the same as the ex O.R.&L. GE's. For one thing, it has Cummings prime movers, not Cats, and there is only one traction motor on each truck with a chain to the other axle. There actually are a number of steel mill specials around the country; EBT had several, the Pine Creek in NJ has two, one ran until recently at Arkansa Limestone, and at one time there was one at Roaring Camp.
