The crew at Cumbres showed some veteran railroaders. Brakeman F.A. (Frank) Young went on to be the senior conductor out of Alamosa in the 1950s. He was the conductor on the westbound freight train stopped one winter night on Toltec siding for an eastbound. Harold Thane was the brakeman. IIRC Trains Magazine published the picture. I forget who the photographer was.
Mr. Young occasionally was the conductor on the San Juan although he did not have enough seniority to hold the run regularly.
Henry Klahn was with a group of enginemen who hired out about 1900. He retired about 1940.
C.A. (Charles) Kellogg was an engineer. His fireman's date was 3-26-1898 but he wasn't promoted to engineer until 7-4-1905. Nine men who were hired as firemen after him were promoted to engineer ahead of him, including George Densmore, whose prior experience on the Florence & Cripple Creek/Golden Circle railroads allowed him to be hired as an engineer.
Engineer J.J. Walsh, mentioned in the article, retired off the Chili Line in the late 1930s. He could have run the San Juan but opted for the Chilli Line instead.
