My understanding is that the change occurred sometime in 1882-83. This was during the delivery of the Class 60 (C-16) locomotives, which order was completed with the fluted domes.

On the Carson & Colorado locomotives #7 and #8 which were built in 1883 came with the "modern" domes. The other locomotives, #1 through #6 built during 1880 through 1882, came with fluted rings..
