Mike,
Please note that on older locomotives the sand dome is made up of at least three pieces not counting the lid.
There is the base which is bolted to the boiler.
The wrapper (center section) usually made from heavy sheet metal.
The top which may be a one piece casting or a two piece casting.
The whole thing is finished off with a lid that is removed to put in the sand.
