It would seem 215 spent several years in obscurity from the point where the Pagosa Springs Branch was discontinued until the early 1940's when it was on the verge of being sold to Mexico when someone figured out that "we oughta keep this big combine, and send one these little combos down south..."

In the above pics you can see 215 still painted green with "passenger" lettering on the baggage end, then painted red with a simple D&RGW on lettering.
