A modest suggestion:
If someone were to try assembling the list discusssed, I would suggest going thru old issues of Trains and Railroad/Railfan both for trip rports (news photos in some isssues of Trains, IIRC) and ads placed looking for riders. Not to mention NGN, of course.
Note that I'm not volunteering, at least not at the present, altho if I do find some time I might do a little bit...
