More likely the latter, Casey -
The original signs were probably created using the 'drop shadow' lettering capability in PhotoShop, and then printed on blued steel

p.s. The signs in Dick Bell's close-ups look to be the same as the ones in John West's long shot, though it's hard to be sure. IMHO, the original dark signs with light lettering hung around for at least ten years after abandonment before being "borrowed" during the 1980's.
