Years ago a guy in Albuquerque had a book on the Apache Ry in the works. I read quite a bit of the manuscript. It was a well done piece. He had amassed quite a collection of photos. But like anything else in the RR book biz, it is hard to find a publisher.
Myrick's series on AZ RR's was supposed to conclude with one more volume that covered the Apache and other logging operations in AZ. Since he passed away, his material has scattered and the final book may never see the light of day.
My very first RR experiences happened with Reed Hatch and the White Mountain Scenic. I too was on the last train to Maverick in 1967(?). I rode the tender of 36 for a portion of the trip. I remember the FM's on the log train heading to Maverick in the afternoon after the passenger train got back to McNary. The train had to be in by 400pm to clear the log train.
Lots of great fading memories.
Earl's first encounter with a living steam locomotive.....July 1966. I was all of 7 years old....Wow, 50 years ago last month.
