I rode from Whitehorse to Skagway in 1972. A very impressive ride, and a very interesting railroad. Two photos taken at Whitehorse that summer:
So why less interest? Well, as others have noted, it is a long way to get there, unless you are on a cruise. So it isn't a very casual railfan trip. And before the 1980s, it was not a very easy drive to anywhere on the WP&Y, so a flight in was more convenient, if not inexpensive. It still is more convenient to fly than to drive - and there is, now, a highway to Skagway. In 1972 to get your car to Skagway, it rode a flatcar from Whitehorse.
Would I go back to the WP&Y again? Possibly, but there is a lot that would have to work to make it a likely summer vacation. I live in the Pacific Northwest, and I am much more likely to visit the Sumpter Valley (it's within a day's drive), or the C&TS and D&S (two long days drive) during my summer vacation. A bit of planning, and I can get all three just listed into the vacation.
