Tourch cutting of rail is not permissible for track that is to meet standards above FRA class one or class two track. The heat needed to cut the rail can creat defects away from the cut if the rail cools sudenly or is uneavenly heated. Thermite welds on CWR must be carefuly done to ensure the defects are not induced due to heat flow.
